lesbiandice:

happy thursday everyone

I’m physically incapable of not reblogging any Out of Touch Thursday memes, even when it’s not even Thursday and nobody mentioned Thursday anyway

when i was a teenager it felt very revolutionary to be cruel to myself. like some kind of slow passive protest against how much everything hurt. i starved myself of sleep and food and tenderness because it felt right. it felt sharp and angry and radical and i wanted to be those things. adulthood is the realisation that the world is already working to cut into you well before you learn how to do it yourself. caring for yourself and others is the real protest

Michelle K, I Know I Deserve More

image

Many of us were taught that we need to change ourselves to make other people comfortable. They tell us our sadness, rage, anxiety makes us unpalatable, unpleasant to be around. We attempt to rebel against authority and conformity by amplifying that self-loathing. We inadvertently continue the cycle of misery that led those before us to the same place.

It feels terrifying to attempt to be kind to yourself when you fear that being kind to yourself means doing what you were told, losing your humanity, learning to blend in. But being kind to yourself and being yourself do not have to be mutually exclusive. You can rebel without self-loathing. You can still rebel with rage, just not directed at yourself. Love is a rebellion in a time so characterized by hate and fear.

(Wish I knew who made the image but I don’t; it’s old and saved to my phone. If anybody does, I’ll add the artist’s info!)

Friendly reminder that:

  • Young people can have arthritis too.
  • There are hundreds of life long conditions and diseases out there that are typically diagnosed between 12 and 30.
  • There is a vast difference between being tired and having chronic fatigue.
  • Just because you can’t tell that someone is unwell from looking at them, doesn’t mean that you should assume that they are ok.
  • Many chronic illnesses are life long, and incurable. Many of them are potentially fatal.
  • If you have a disease like Lupus, on good days you still feel like you have a bad flu, 24/7.
  • Many of the medications used to treat chronic conditions have side effects that can really affect someone’s self esteem - like extreme weight gain, skin changes and hair loss.
  • Most chronic illnesses have very little awareness - its unlikely that you’ve heard of Sjogren’s Syndrome, Scleroderma, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Fibromyalgia.
  • However these diseases can cause symptoms as varied as joint pain, fatigue, constant nausea, kidney failure, pneumonia, photo sensitivity, full body rashes, paralysis, strokes etc.
  • So please remember that invisible illnesses exist too :)

Do not mistake composure for ease.

No one should need to have - or be on the verge of - a breakdown for you to take them and their needs seriously.

Whats your favorite piece you’ve made? Reblog with a picture, tag me, send it to me. You deserve praise for your work.

My mom tried to get me into cross stitch when I was a kid and I hated every second of it. Just found the pattern for the little kit I got about 10% of the way through as a kid (not the actual stitch through sadly). Here’s what 12 year old me started and 31 year old me finished.

image

I’m glad you enjoyed it in the end. The first piece you do is always something to enjoy. It looks great. My first piece was baad but I still like it.

The first piece I ever strayed from the pattern for. 😊 (Not by much - just found a lettering pattern free online and added “Mom” to the bottom, but still!) Also it’s definitely not centered correctly in this hoop but uh… ignore that.
